It has been months since we’ve seen new The Witcher content released on Netflix, with The Witcher season 2 coming out in 2021, but the good news is that The Witcher universe on Netflix is expanding!
A prequel series set 1,200 years before The Witcher, The Witcher: Blood Origin follows a group of seven outcasts who unite in the elven world to stop a powerful force. Michelle Yeoh, Sophia Brown, Minnie Driver, Laurence O’Fuarain, Lenny Henry, Mirren Mack, Nathaniel Curtis, and Dylan Moran.
While Netflix has been releasing more shows in separate volumes lately, that will not be the case with The Witcher: Blood Origin, especially since the show’s marketing has shifted to promote it as an event series. All episodes will be released together on Dec. 25.
The Witcher prequel series originally consisted of six episodes in total, but Redanian Intelligence previously reported that the team behind the show was unhappy with the first version of the series. Some reshoots resulted in the six episodes getting significantly pared down, re-edited, and adjusted to fit a four-part series instead of the initial order.
During a recent interview, showrunner Lauren Hissrich said the new version of the limited series has fewer slow parts. The initial version took longer to introduce the characters and get going.
"“Originally we met the characters in a much more slow way, sort of every episode gathered one new character, but we realized that these characters were strongest when we were seeing them working as a team […] and we didn’t have the whole team assembled until much later in the show and we realized we wanted to speed that up.“"
Netflix hasn’t released the official episode titles yet, but we know that the first episode is titled “Of Ballads and Bloody Blades.” The entire four-episode event series is also supposedly 149 minutes total in length, meaning each episode probably runs at about 48-50 minutes, give or take.
The Witcher: Blood Origin arrives on Sunday, Dec. 25, only on Netflix. Add the series to your watchlist right now.
