Junji Ito fans are about to get a great New Year’s gift in the form of a new anime series adapting several of Ito’s creepiest tales. Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre will feature many of Ito’s most popular stories, including “Ice Cream Bus,” “Hanging Balloons,” “The Thing That Drifted Ashore,” and more!
Several of Ito’s works have been adapted in the past, most notably Tomie, which received a series of anime films, the last of which came out in 2011. But it has been almost five years since we’ve gotten a new Ito adaptation, so the excitement for Junji Ito Maniac is high.
Considered the master of Japanese horror, Ito has picked up countless accolades throughout his career and amassed a large and loyal fanbase thanks to his creative storytelling and uniquely grotesque imagery. One of his most famous and notable manga series is Uzumaki, about a mysterious town cursed by the spiral shape. An Uzumaki anime adaptation is in the works, but while we wait for it to (finally) come out, it’ll be great to see more of Ito’s stories come to life in Netflix’s haunting anthology series, releasing on Jan. 19, 2023.
