Born in New York City with actress Tippi Hedren and advertising director Peter Griffith, she mainly grew up in Los Angeles, where she graduated from the Hollywood Professional School at the age of 16. In 1975, 17-year-old Griffith appeared opposite Gene Hackman in Arthur Penn's film noir Night Moves. She later rose to prominence for playing an actor in porn movies in Brian De Palma's horror film Body Double, which won her the National Film Critics Association award. Griffith's subsequent performance in the comedy Something Wild received critical acclaim before being chosen as a Working Girl in 1988, earning her an Oscar nomination.
