What is Netflix's Mexican comedy series Against the Ropes about?

Not to be confused with the 2004 sports drama starring Meg Ryan, Against the Ropes is a new Mexican comedy series on Netflix inspired by Lucha libre wrestling. Premiering just a few days before Royal Rumble kicks off the Road to WrestleMania, Against the Ropes should be the perfect binge-watch for anyone missing Starz’s Heels or GLOW.

Against the Ropes stars Mexican actress Caraly Sánchez, Venezuelan actress Scarlet Gruber, Alisson Santiago, Michelle Rodríguez, Giovanna Zacarías, María Balam, and Valentina Buzzurro.

Whether you’re in the mood for a fun wrestling show or intrigued by what sounds like a sweet mother-daughter relationship, Against the Ropes has a little something for everyone.

When Ángela (Caraly Sánchez) is released from prison, she’s dismayed to learn that her daughter Rocio (Alisson Santiago) has become obsessed with her father’s new girlfriend, a Lucha libre wrestler Candy Caramelo (Scarlet Gruber).

Desperate to reconnect with Rocio, Ángela creates the secret wrestling persona Novia Negra, or “The Bride in Black,” and begins training to become a talented Lucha libra wrestler in her own right.

Here is the official series synopsis shared by Netflix:

"After spending six years in prison for a crime she did not commit, Ángela must face her greatest challenge: to regain control of her life and win back the love and respect of Rocío, her daughter. Realizing that Rocío is a great fan of wrestling, she finds in them and her alter ego Novia Negra the way to conquer the audiences and, most importantly, her daughter’s heart."

Professional wrestler Rey Mysterio will guest star in the new series! So far, that’s the only WWE star who has been announced, but it’s possible that the show will feature additional cameos.

An ex-convict tries to regain her daughter's affection after leaving prison, but it seems impossible — until she steps into the ring. Against the Ropes, featuring @reymysterio premieres on January 25, only on @netflix!
