It’s Morphin Time! Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always is Netflix’s new reunion movie commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the popular Power Rangers franchise. Many of the original cast members reprised their roles in the film, but Amy Jo Johnson chose not to take part in it. Why is that? We shared Johnson’s reasoning for opting out of participating in the reunion below.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always is a Netflix film directed by Charlie Haskell from a screenplay co-written by Becca Barnes and Alwyn Dale. It takes place 30 years after the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers were formed. Rita Repulsa, an enemy from the past, has returned to destroy the superhero team and the Power Rangers must band together once again to save the world.
Steve Cardenas returns as Rocky DeSantos/Red Ranger, Walter Jones as Zack Taylor/Black Ranger, David Yost as Billy Cranston/Blue Ranger, and Catherine Sutherland as Katherine Hillard/Pink Ranger. Additionally, Barbara Goodson returns to voice the iconic villain, Rita Repulsa.
Amy Jo Johnson played the first Pink Ranger, so many fans hoped she’d return and join the rest of the original cast in the new film. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case, but the talented actress has come out and revealed her reason for not returning.
Back in January 2023, Johnson addressed why she wouldn’t be in the reunion movie on Twitter. Her tweet read, “For the record I never said no…I just didn’t say yes to what was offered. But other fun stuff is in-store! Looking forward to watching my friends kick ass! #PowerRangers30.”
After she posted this tweet, people started speculating that the reason she wouldn’t be in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always is because she wasn’t offered that much money to return. However, Johnson shut down this rumor in March.
In a now-deleted tweet from March 26, John said this about her absence in the film,
"“Please stop saying I didn’t do reunion because of money. Simply not true.” “Maybe I just didn’t want to wear spandex in my 50s or couldn’t go to NZ for a month. Or none of ur beeswax.”"
Johnson also mentioned that she and the late Jason David Frank (the original Green Power Ranger) both chose not to participate in the reunion for their own reasons and that the film was shot before Frank passed away.
